Which squash shoes suit your game?

Squash involves fast starts, sudden stops, deep lunges and frequent changes of direction. A suitable shoe should guide the foot laterally, grip reliably on indoor courts and still allow dynamic footwork.

The most expensive shoe is not automatically the best option. Fit, lateral stability, cushioning, weight and direct court contact must work together.

Choose squash shoes by player type

Grip and non-marking outsoles

A grippy indoor outsole supports quick starts, controlled stops and changes of direction. It should be suitable for indoor court surfaces without leaving dark marks during normal use.

A non-marking label alone is not enough. Squash shoes also require secure midfoot hold, heel guidance and suitable lateral support.

Lateral stability during fast movement

Much of the load in squash acts laterally. The foot should therefore remain controlled inside the shoe during lunges and counter-movements.

Narrow, standard or wide fit?

Squash shoes differ in forefoot width, midfoot volume, instep height and heel shape. Shoe size alone therefore does not determine whether a model fits correctly.

Badminton or squash shoes?

Badminton and squash place very similar demands on indoor shoes. Lateral movement, sudden stops, lunges, grip and secure midfoot support are important in both sports.

Many high-quality indoor court shoes can therefore be used for both. The actual fit and balance of grip, stability, cushioning and weight matter more than the category name.

When should squash shoes be replaced?

• smooth or unevenly worn outsole areas,
• reduced grip during starts and stops,
• damaged or softened lateral sections,
• compressed or uneven cushioning,
• reduced heel and midfoot support.
