Which squash racket suits your game?

Weight, balance, frame shape and stringing work together to determine how quickly a squash racket moves and how stable, powerful or direct the ball contact feels. Individual specifications should not be considered in isolation.

The lightest racket is not automatically the best choice for every player. A head-heavy racket also does not automatically create more power without suitable technique. The complete setup is what matters.

The stated frame weight affects handling but does not fully describe how heavy a racket feels during the swing. Balance, strings, grip and weight distribution also influence the actual playing feel.

Head size and string pattern

A larger hitting area may provide a broader usable contact zone, while a more compact head can offer more direct feedback. Forgiveness also depends on the frame shape, string pattern and string setup.

A more open string pattern can create a livelier response. A denser pattern may provide a more controlled feel and more even string support. The string and tension must always be considered as part of the setup.

Squash rackets for beginners

Beginners should not automatically choose the lightest or most expensive racket. A useful starting model remains manageable, sufficiently stable and reasonably forgiving on imperfect contact.

Squash rackets for club and competitive play

Advanced players can select more specifically by style. A fast volley player may need a different balance from a player who applies pressure through powerful length and pace.

With frequent training, consistency, durability, grip feel and the option of an individual string setup become increasingly important.

Strings and tension

The string affects feel, acceleration, control and durability. Thinner strings can provide lively feedback but are not automatically the right choice for every player or level of mechanical load.

A softer setup may support comfort and ball acceleration. Higher tension may provide more direct feedback but often reduces the comfortable hitting zone. Never exceed the racket manufacturer’s maximum permitted tension.

Adjusting the grip feel

A grip that is too thin or too thick may affect racket control. A suitable replacement grip or overgrip can adjust grip thickness, moisture absorption and surface feel.

Additional grip material also adds weight to the handle and may make the racket feel slightly more head-light.
