What is an overgrip?

An overgrip is a thin grip wrapped over the existing replacement grip of a badminton racket. The original grip normally remains on the handle.

Overgrips are useful for quickly renewing a worn surface, improving moisture control or adapting the handle feel to personal preference. They increase the handle size only slightly.

As overgrips are thin, they increase the handle size only slightly. Greater overlap creates a somewhat thicker handle, while less overlap provides a thinner and more direct feel.

When should an overgrip be replaced?

• The surface feels smooth or slippery.
• The overgrip no longer manages moisture effectively.
• The material is heavily soiled or discoloured.
• The edges loosen or the surface begins to tear.
• You need to hold the racket more tightly than usual.

There is no single replacement interval for every player. Playing frequency, perspiration, grip pressure and material all affect wear.

How to wrap an overgrip

1. Remove a heavily worn or dirty overgrip.
2. Start at the bottom of the racket handle.
3. Wrap upwards using even tension.
4. Maintain a consistent, slight overlap.
5. Cut the end neatly and secure it with finishing tape.

Check the length and pack size

Not every overgrip has the same length. Shorter models may be ideal for badminton rackets but may not cover longer tennis or squash handles. Check the product details before purchasing.

Single grips and small multipacks are suitable for testing. Larger boxes and reels are often more economical for clubs, teams, coaches and frequent players.
