Choose shoes for your playing style

Narrow, standard or wide fit?

Width is just as important as length. A shoe that is too wide allows the foot to move sideways. A shoe that is too narrow may cause pressure, numbness and discomfort.

Lateral stability for squash

Squash loads the shoe in several directions rather than only forwards. The shoe must therefore hold the foot securely during lunges and rapid recovery movements.

Look for a stable midsole, secure heel guidance and an upper that supports the foot. A wider sole base may provide additional stability.

Grip and non-marking soles

A grippy indoor outsole supports quick starts, controlled stops and rapid changes of direction. It should be suitable for indoor courts and avoid leaving dark abrasion marks.

Non-marking alone is not sufficient. A suitable squash shoe also needs lateral stability, appropriate cushioning and secure midfoot hold.

Finding the correct size

The toes need some movement room but should not strike the front during sudden stops. The heel must remain secure and should not lift during movement or lunges.

• Try shoes with the sports socks you will use on court.
• Consider both feet, as they may differ slightly in size.
• Check heel hold and available forefoot space.
• Test the shoe with your own insole when applicable.
• Do not assume equivalent sizes fit identically across brands.

Why suitable badminton shoes also work for squash

Squash and badminton require similar movement: explosive starts, rapid stops, lateral steps and stable lunges. Premium badminton shoes therefore normally meet the same technical requirements as quality squash shoes.

Choose by playing frequency

Insoles for additional comfort and support

A suitable insole can improve cushioning, pressure distribution and foot guidance. It may be useful when the original insole is too soft, too flat or insufficiently supportive.

An insole cannot correct a shoe that is fundamentally too large, too narrow or laterally unstable.

When should squash shoes be replaced?

• The outsole has become smooth and loses grip.
• Lateral support feels noticeably softer.
• Cushioning has clearly deteriorated.
• The heel is no longer held securely.
• The upper, seams or sole edge are damaged.
