Which badminton shoes suit children and juniors?

Badminton involves quick lateral movement, sudden stops, lunges and frequent changes of direction. Children therefore need grippy indoor shoes that hold the foot securely while still allowing natural movement.

Not every shoe in a small size is automatically a dedicated junior model. Some shoes are designed specifically for children. Selected standard badminton shoes may also suit teenagers when the size, width, weight and overall fit are appropriate.

Choosing the right size and growing room

Children’s feet can change within a relatively short period. Measure both feet regularly, use the longer measurement and wear the sports socks intended for training.

A small amount of growing room is useful. The shoe should not be so long or wide that the heel lifts or the foot moves inside the shoe during sudden stops and lateral play.

Important: Buying several sizes larger for future use is not a good solution. An excessively large shoe provides less controlled support and may make footwork more difficult.

Hook-and-loop fastening

Quick and easy to use. Particularly practical for younger children who need to put their shoes on and take them off independently.

Laces

Allow finer adjustment around the instep and midfoot. Laces should be tied securely and should not loosen during training.

Narrow or wide children’s feet

Children’s feet also vary in width, instep height and heel shape. Side pressure around the forefoot may indicate that the shoe is too narrow or too low at the front.

Do not simply buy a narrow shoe much longer. For a wider foot, a model explicitly described as Wide or broad is normally the better option.

Fit check: Do not rely only on the child saying the shoe feels comfortable. Check that the heel remains secure, the forefoot is not compressed and the foot stays stable during lateral movement.

When should children’s badminton shoes be replaced?

Check the shoes regularly rather than waiting until they are visibly too small. Replacement may be appropriate when:

the toes touch the front or are under side pressure,
the outsole is smooth or unevenly worn,
grip during sudden stops has noticeably reduced,
the heel is no longer held securely,
seams, upper material or lateral reinforcements are damaged.

Care tip: Remove damp shoes from the bag after training and allow them to dry open at room temperature. Direct heat may place unnecessary stress on materials and bonded areas.

An insole may alter heel hold, support or comfort. It cannot correct a shoe that is clearly too short, too narrow or fundamentally the wrong shape.
