Very short starter models
Shaftless or heavily shortened rackets are designed for small hands and first contact with the shuttle. The shorter lever makes it easier to lift, stop and control the racket head.

Find a kids’ or junior badminton racket that suits the child’s height, grip control and stage of development. Shorter rackets are easier for young players to move and provide a manageable introduction to badminton for leisure, school and training.
Your benefits: genuine kids’ and junior models · several length stages · personal expert advice
Racket World: child-appropriate racket selection · personal advice · models for leisure, school and training · 1-month return policy
Age is not the only factor when choosing a child’s racket. Height, arm length, strength, coordination and the ability to control the racket are more important. A racket that is too long can feel cumbersome during the first movements and may touch the floor more often. A suitably shortened model can be controlled closer to the body and helps young players learn clean basic movements.
This category therefore contains genuine kids’ and junior rackets. It includes heavily shortened starter models, medium junior lengths and longer transition rackets. A full-length beginner racket does not become a child’s racket simply because it is inexpensive or lightweight.
Shaftless or heavily shortened rackets are designed for small hands and first contact with the shuttle. The shorter lever makes it easier to lift, stop and control the racket head.
As the child grows, the racket may become longer. Medium junior rackets already support more badminton-specific movements while remaining noticeably easier to handle than a full-length adult racket.
For taller children, longer junior rackets combine greater reach with manageable handling. They form the transition towards the usual racket length for teenagers and adults.
Age recommendations can be a useful first guide, but they are not a rigid rule. Two children of the same age can differ significantly in height, strength and coordination. Racket length should therefore always be considered together with the child’s actual handling.
| Length or construction | Typical use | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Shaftless or very heavily shortened | First contact with the shuttle and very small hands | The grip can be held securely and the head lifted easily |
| Short junior length | Smaller children and the first badminton-specific basics | Compare the exact product length and grip construction |
| Medium junior length | Growing children, school and more regular training | Consider height, strength and coordination together |
| Longer junior and transition models | Taller children moving towards standard length | The racket must remain controllable during short movements |
| Full racket length | Taller or technically confident teenagers | Only move up when length, weight and grip can be controlled safely |
The selection ranges from especially short VICTOR starter models to medium junior rackets and longer transition models from VICTOR, Yonex and Oliver. Depending on the model, the rackets differ in length, weight, grip construction, head shape and material. The product listing shows the currently available rackets, while each product page contains the relevant manufacturer specifications.
Very short models such as the VICTOR Starter and VICTOR Advanced are intended for small hands and a controlled introduction to the game.
Models such as the VICTOR Training, Oliver Orion 58 and Yonex Muscle Power 2 Junior extend the selection for school, leisure and more regular training.
Longer models such as the VICTOR AL-2200 Kiddy suit taller children who already play with more control but still benefit from a shortened shaft.
Many children’s and school rackets combine an aluminium frame with a steel shaft. This robust construction is more tolerant of accidental floor contact or racket clashes. Weight should not be considered in isolation: a shorter racket may be easier to control than a longer model even when the number of grams is higher, because the lever is shorter.
Grip size and construction also matter. Small hands need a grip that can be held securely. A grip that is too thick makes fine grip changes more difficult, while a grip that is too thin or slippery may cause the child to squeeze unnecessarily hard.
For occasional play, robust and uncomplicated models are the priority. A manageable length matters more than a highly technical frame construction.
Durability, clear length stages and straightforward handling are particularly important when rackets are used by groups or in school.
When a child trains regularly, racket length and weight should grow with technical development. Moving to the next model should not be tied automatically to a birthday.
Moving up makes sense when the child can guide the longer racket without repeated floor contact, control the racket head in front of the body and switch between forehand and backhand without a tense grip. A full-length, accessible beginner racket may already suit taller teenagers. For smaller children, a shortened model is usually the better choice.
When full length is required with a lower overall weight, suitable options can be found in our lightweight badminton rackets . These are still adult-length rackets and do not automatically replace a shortened junior model.
Many kids’ and junior rackets are supplied factory strung and are ready to use. For first contact with the shuttle, school and leisure play, an uncomplicated feel and durable stringing are usually more important than a highly specialised setup.
The manufacturer’s maximum permitted string tension must not be exceeded. A particularly high tension does not automatically improve a junior racket. For suitable transition models, we are happy to advise whether individual stringing may become useful later.
Height, strength and secure racket control are decisive. Smaller children usually benefit from a clearly shortened model, while taller children can move gradually to longer junior rackets.
No. Age recommendations are only a guide because children develop at different rates. Actual handling is more important.
No. Low weight does not replace an appropriate length and grip. A full-length lightweight racket may suit taller teenagers, but it is often still unsuitable for smaller children.
When the current racket has become clearly too short and the next length can be handled without tense movement, frequent floor contact or loss of grip control.
Yes. The correct length and intended use are decisive. Robust models work particularly well for school and groups, while children who train regularly can move to a longer model as their technique develops.
Compare kids’ and junior rackets by length, weight, material and intended use or contact us for personal advice. Immediately available, factory-strung stock ordered before 11 a.m. on working days is normally dispatched the same day. Badminton rackets with individual professional custom stringing are excluded from this dispatch rule.
